Can Solar Panels Run My AC?

When you install your new solar array, you are likely quite excited about running your home’s AC system with the power from the sun. But can this actually be done?

The short answer is, yes, you can power your air conditioner with solar energy. But there isn’t just one way to do it. Our team at Solar Bear Orlando explains what you need to know.

Solar Powered Air Conditioners

New AC units can run on the power produced by solar systems. Some common units that homeowners often install are small heat pump air conditioning systems that can heat or cool from the power generated by four or five solar panels. The downside is that these small heat pumps offer a low cooling capacity and generally only cool around 250 square feet of space. This may be fine for one room in your home, but will likely not be enough to cool your entire home.

There are also larger solar-powered units on the market that can cool a standard-sized home. These units are powered directly by solar panels that are usually connected to the grid. The number of solar panels you will need to run a larger unit will depend on the size of the system and your cooling needs.

The drawback of using a solar air conditioner is that when you aren’t using your AC unit, the power from your solar panels will go to waste.

Grid-Tied Systems

A grid-tied solar system is also another option that is the most popular here in Florida. These can easily power your home’s AC and other appliances in the home. The number of solar panels you would need will depend on the size of the air conditioner, how hot it gets in your area, and your family’s cooling habits.

If you need additional power for your air conditioner or other appliances, you can still draw it from the grid since the system is tied to the electrical grid. Plus, if you set up solar batteries, any excess power that you generate can be stored for later use or during a power outage.

Another option that works well with a grid-tied system is a mini-split air conditioner that can cool one to two rooms with a small solar battery system. This can help save money on using your central AC, by offsetting its overall usage.
